Sergio Perez apologised to his Red Bull team after crashing during the second stage of qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix.
He admitted he made a mistake when he locked a wheel and skidded into the TecPro barriers at turn three during the first half of Q2.
He kept his car running but a red flag was thrown after he was unable to get away from the barrier. “I was able to get to reverse in but the front wing got stuck underneath the TecPro,” he said.
“It was a mistake from my side,” he said. “So I’m very sorry for my team. I let them down today, unfortunately.
“I’ve got to be thinking already for tomorrow and hopefully I’m able to recover and get into into strong points.”
Perez denied there was any problem with his car which contributed to his error. “I wasn’t struggling with the brakes. I think they were on the cold side.
“I had a lock-up into turn 10 the lap before, I flat-spotted [the tyres] and that probably meant that I was a bit out of shape. Then going to turn three I became just a passenger as soon as I touched the brake and it was a bit too much.”
The session was run in wet but drying conditions. Perez had switched from full wets to intermediates when he went off. “It can be tricky and difficult,” he said, “but it was just a mistake from my side.”
Perez will start the Canadian Grand Prix from 13th place. He is still ahead of Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc who will start from 19th place due to penalties.
The Red Bull driver said he aims to limit in the impact of his mistake in tomorrow’s race. “I will try to minimise the damage and just attack from lap one onwards and see where we end up.”
