McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl apologised to his drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris after a disappointing display in Canada.
Norris limped home in P15 while Ricciardo missed out on the points in P11, meaning McLaren ended pointless for the first time since Miami.
The young Brit appeared to have troubles with his engine as he slipped further and further down the grid having qualified in P14. He was able to make back some ground before a slow pit stop undid all his progress.
Ricciardo meanwhile lacked the pace to defend his points position, slipping behind Zhou Guanyu and Lance Stroll as the race went on.
After the race, Seidl made the unusual response of apologising to his drivers for failing to give them “the package they deserved.”
“A very disappointing Sunday afternoon for us in Montreal,” the 46-year-old said. “It’s been a tough weekend in general, with the car lacking pace, having reliability issues and suffering an operational issue in the double-shuffle pitstop during the Virtual Safety Car period.
“We have to acknowledge our competitors did a better job and therefore we didn’t deserve points today.
“We didn’t give Lando or Daniel the package they deserved today, so we have to offer them an apology. We also have to use this as an opportunity to learn, and come back stronger in two weeks for our home race at Silverstone.”
McLaren split the strategy of their two drivers, with Norris being one of few drivers to start on the hard tyre while Ricciardo began the race on the medium.

But any chance of Norris jumping further up the field was scuppered when his tyres weren’t ready for him when he pitted under the Virtual Safety Car, with a five-second penalty also sent his way for speeding in the pit lane.
In all, he’ll be happy to see the back of Montreal for another year.
“Very,” Norris told reporters when asked if Sunday was frustrating. “Because it’s just a lot of effort goes in from everyone you know, and today we just didn’t have the package – the car, the straight line speed.
“I mean, starting from 14th, you know, struggling around with some cars honestly we shouldn’t be racing against, but at the same time, we have to make the most of it.
“One of the biggest factors was we just couldn’t overtake. Simple as that. And therefore I’m just like behind slower cars and you just can’t do…
