Scuderia AlphaTauri confirmed on Friday that French driver Pierre Gasly will continue to drive for the team into the 2023 season.
The announcement made by the team on Friday comes as a confirmation of Scuderia AlphaTauri Team Principal Franz Tost’s words when asked about Pierre Gasly’s future last weekend at the Canadian Grand Prix.
Amidst speculations about whether the 26-year-old journey with the team could finish by the end of the year, Tost asserted the 2020 F1 Italian Grand Prix winner was 100 percent confirmed to stay with the Faenza-based squad for another season.
Following the official announcement by the Scuderia, Gasly outlined: “I have been with this team for five years now, and I am proud of the journey we’ve been through together and the progress we have made.
“I’m happy to remain with my Scuderia AlphaTauri team. This year’s new regulations have created new challenges for us, and being able to plan our development with the team for the next 18 months is a good working basis for the future.”
After 9 of 22 rounds into the 2022 Formula 1 season, he is in 11th place in the overall standings with 16 points.
“We are really pleased to confirm that Pierre stays with us in 2023,” Tost commented.
“He is definitely in the group of the best and most competitive drivers in F1 and has proven his abilities during all the time he has spent with us.
“Undoubtedly, Pierre can play a major role in the team having a successful season next year, and it will be down to us to provide him with a competitive car so that he can continue to deliver excellent results.”
The young Frenchman became a member of the Red Bull Junior Team in 2013.
The first taste of a Formula One car would come in 2015, as he took part in the in-season test held in Barcelona at the wheel of Scuderia Toro Rosso’s car, a sister brand to the Red Bull Racing team.
Later that year, after further testing, Gasly became a reserve driver for Red Bull, a role he would continue to fulfill for the next two seasons, alongside his driving duties in Formula One feeder series, the FIA Formula 2 championship.
In 2016, he graduated from GP2 (currently Formula 2) with honors, winning four races and securing nine podiums and five pole positions.
His official debut at the pinnacle of motorsport would come a year later, replacing Russian driver Daniil Kvyat in Toro Rosso at the Malaysian Grand Prix.
