Podium finishers Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen, and Lewis Hamilton have all been given suspended monetary fines.
Austrian Grand Prix winner Charles Leclerc, second-place finisher Max Verstappen, and third-place finisher Lewis Hamilton, have each been given suspended monetary fines of €10,000 for post-race parc ferme breaches.
The three podium finishers were each summoned before the race stewards in Austria several hours after the chequered flag, on the grounds of a breach of Article 12.2.1.i of the International Sporting Code outlined as “Failure to follow the instructions of the relevant officials for the safe and orderly conduct of the Event.”
Following a meeting with team representatives from Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes, the stewards reached the verdict of issuing a fine having found that all three teams had sent along personnel to attend to their drivers before the official weighing procedure – expressly forbidden in the event notes.
“The Stewards received a report from the Media Delegate,” read the verdicts, “which was subsequently confirmed by video evidence, that the physio / drivers’ assistants of the top three finishers entered parc ferme without permission and in violation of the procedure that was published prior to the race ‘for the orderly conduct of the event’.”
“In part, this is to prevent handing over of items to the drivers prior to them being weighed.
“The Competitor [ie. all three teams] is fined €10,000, which will be suspended for the remainder of the season pending any further violation of the procedure, and the competitors are warned that the passes of the individuals concerned may be revoked in case of systemic violation.”
Meanwhile, a separate investigation into Alpine’s Fernando Alonso’s alleged release from the pits with his car in unsafe condition has resulted in the Spaniard escaping penalty. This was after the investigation revealed a parts failure was to blame for Alonso’s wheel working loose, rather than an error made by the team during a pitstop.
