Mick Schumacher, a former driver with the Haas F1 Team, will join Mercedes in the role of Reserve Driver for 2023, the Brackley-based outfit announced on Thursday.
Mick Schumacher will start a new chapter at the pinnacle of motorsport, acting as a reserve driver for the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team in 2023.
The official announcement came after Scuderia Ferrari issued a statement confirming that the driver and the Italian manufacturer had mutually agreed on parting ways after four years as a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy (FDA).
“I am thrilled to be part of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team as their reserve driver for 2023, and I am committed to giving it my all to contribute to their performance in this very competitive and professional environment,” he said about his new career challenge.
“I take this as a new start, and I am just excited and grateful to Toto and everybody involved for putting their trust in me.
“F1 is such a fascinating world, and you never stop learning, so I look forward to absorbing more knowledge and putting in all my efforts for the benefit of the Mercedes team.”
Mercedes is one of the most successful teams in Formula One history, winning eight consecutive Constructors’ championships (2014-2021) and seven Drivers’ titles (2014-2020) in the hybrid era.
In 2023, the German driver will work with the outfit trackside as running on the simulator, helping with the development of the W14 challenger.
Speaking about Schumacher Junior, Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO of Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team, commented: “Mick is a talented young driver, and were delighted to have him join the Team.”
“He is a hard worker, has a calm and methodical approach, and is still hungry to learn and improve as a driver. These are all important qualities, and were excited for him to help us develop the W14.”
“We also know that with two years of experience racing in Formula One under his belt, he will be ready to step into the car at short notice to replace either Lewis or George, should that need arise.”
By the end of 2022, the two-year partnership between the 23-year-old and Haas F1 Team ended as the American squad decided not to retain the driver for the upcoming season.
During his time with the team acting as a full-time driver, he took part in 43 Grand Prix, scoring 12 points, achieving his career-best result at this year’s Austrian Grand Prix to cross the finish line in sixth place.
