LONDON, ENGLAND – May 9, 2023 – (Motor Sports NewsWire) – RM Sotheby’s continues to build its European team with the news that Sholto Gilbertson is joining the London office as Director of Sales, United Kingdom. Sholto will be known to many in the industry for his long and illustrious career at Bonhams, where he was Director of the Motor Car Department. Sholto’s appointment is the next step in further developing RM Sotheby’s UK presence as the business builds towards expanding its UK sales roster. RM Sotheby’s currently has one annual sale in London—the oldest in its European calendar.

Sholto has an enviable breadth of experience across the classic car market, with exceptional car knowledge from veterans through to modern supercars. A trained auctioneer, Sholto has conducted over 60 auctions from the rostrum and has personally overseen over £200 million in motor car sales. This includes personal highlights such as selling the 1960 DB4GT ‘Jet’ Coupe for £3,249,500, a 1931 Bugatti Type 55 Roadster for €4,600,000, and the ex-Scuderia Ferrari, ex-Richard-Shuttleworth, 1935 Donington Grand Prix-winning 1932-34 Alfa Romeo Tipo B Grand Prix Monoposto, which sold for £4,593,500.

Like so many within the RM Sotheby’s team, cars are both his professional vocation and his private passion.

With a father who specialized in dealing in Bentleys and Rolls-Royces, Sholto was surrounded by cars from an early age. Having gained some initial experience with world-renowned Rolls-Royce / Bentley specialists P&A Wood, Sholto then moved into the memorabilia department at Bonhams. It was from there that he rose up the ranks to become Director of the department, being a leading light in the UK auction market.
