Aston Martin F1 Team revealed on Tuesday details about a private test held last week in Budapest, in which the outfit’s Driver Ambassador, Jessica Hawkins, took on the wheel of the AMR21, becoming the first woman to test a Formula 1 car since 2018.
In a private test held last week at the Hungaroring, AMF1 Team Driver Ambassador Jessica Hawkins drove a Formula One car for the first time, fulfilling a lifetime dream.
Hawkins completed a 26-lap run for Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant Formula One Team behind the wheel of the AMR21 challenger, delivering what the team described as “a strong performance.”
Following the outing at the Hungaroring – home for the Hungarian F1 Grand Prix – where she shared the car with AMF1 Test and Reserve Driver Felipe Drugovich, the 28-year-old Briton became the first female driver since Tatiana Calderon with Sauber in 2018 to test a modern Formula One car.
“I want to say a big thank you to everyone at AMF1 Team for having the trust in me, believing in me, and for giving me this opportunity,” the W Series podium finisher stated.
Addressing the experience of driving a Formula 1 car, she commented: “It’s taken me every bit of blood, sweat and tears to get here. When I first heard it might be a possibility, I could hardly believe it.
“Nothing will compare to the acceleration and braking of a Formula One car, and having looked at the data, I’m really proud of my performance.”
Moreover, the British Karting Champion sent an inspirational message to other women in pursuit of their dreams: “Getting to drive the AMR21 has been a dream come true for me and one I’ve been ready to fulfill for a long time.
“I’ll keep pushing for more, and in the process, I want to inspire other women and let them know they should follow their dream no matter what it is.”
Hawkins joined the Silvertone-based outfit in 2021, setting off preparatory simulator work last year.
In 2024, she will support the team’s entry into the all-female F1 Academy series.
The series, whose Managing Director is Susie Wolff, comprises 15 cars and 15 drivers. All 10 Formula 1 teams will have one driver and their own livery on one car competing in the innovative series.
Five teams will each have three cars and three drivers.
Furthermore, Mike Krack, Team Principal, AMF1 Team, gave insights about Hawkins’ F1 debut test, outlining: “This is a special moment – for both AMF1 Team and for Jessica, who is an important member of our driver squad.”
