Will Power Qualifies On Pole For GMR Grand Prix At Indianapolis

Will Power qualified on pole for the 9th annual GMR Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Friday afternoon.

Power, a five-time winner in IndyCar on the IMS road course, now has 64 career poles in IndyCar, just three away from Mario Andretti’s all-time record mark of 67. The Australian has made a big statement in the first session at IMS in the month of May, as he looks for his second win in the Indianapolis 500 at the end of the month.

Alex Palou will line up second for the Saturday afternoon race, Power having beat him by just 0.0426 of a second. The entire fast six were separated by slightly less than three-tenths of a second. Josef Newgarden qualified third and Conor Daly, a surprise fast six qualifier, ended up fourth. Pato O’Ward qualified fifth and Felix Rosenqvist ended up sixth.

There were no incidents and/or wrecks in the knock-out qualifying sessions.

Round 2

Palou was fastest in the session. Callum Illott qualified seventh, and Christian Lundgaard ended up eighth. Jack Harvey qualified ninth, Roman Grosjean will start in the top ten in 10th, Scott McLaughlin was 11th and Graham Rahal qualified 12th.

Group One

Power was fastest in this group. Takuma Sato finished 7th and will start 13th on the grid on Saturday afternoon, then Rinus Veekay in 8th and 15th on the grid. Then Devlin DeFrancesco in 9th, Helio Castroneves in 10th, Scott Dixon in 11th, and Juan Pablo Montoya in 12th. Tatiana Calderon took up the rear in 13th.

Group Two

O’Ward was fastest in this group. Colton Herta just missed out on round two in 7th and qualified 14th overall. Alexander Rossi was eighth and Marcus Ericsson was ninth in the group, starting 16th and 18th respectively. Simon Pagenaud finished 10th, then Kyle Kirkwood was 11th, David Malukas was 12th, Dalton Kellett in 13th, and Jimmie Johnson qualified last in 14th.
