Daniel Ricciardo explains his "strange" Monaco Grand Prix practice crash

Daniel Ricciardo explained his crash in FP2 for the Monaco Grand Prix was “a little strange” given the circumstances of how it happened.

The McLaren driver suffered understeer going through Tabac corner and as his car corrected heading into the Swimming Pool section, the rear end stepped out and his MCL36 appeared to bottom out during the change of direction as he then slid towards the barrier.

He confirmed over team radio he was okay after the impact, but the rest of his Friday practice running was scuppered as a result.

The 2018 winner of the Monaco Grand Prix was able to elaborate on the circumstances behind the crash, admitting he and the team tried different set-up configurations and they “pushed a few things” while doing so.

But despite the setback, he feels confident he can bounce back heading into FP3 and qualifying on Saturday.

“I was very, I mean, it obviously happens quickly,” Ricciardo told reporters after practice. “But I kind of slowed down as well.

“I knew everything that was happening. I tried to save it but already kind of into Turn 13 I already started losing it.

“I can feel the car was starting to get away from me. And yeah, a little strange. I think normally you could probably pick up some stuff maybe on Turn 14 on the kerb. If you kind of get a bit too greedy then the car can get unloaded.

“But I think honestly, we just pushed a few things with set-up. Obviously we are trying, but we are still a little too far out probably in a couple of areas.

“So I tried my best to save it but we couldn’t, so we will fix it. Obviously we missed all the session, but I’m okay. We’ll be ready to go tomorrow.
