Max Verstappen says he is not thinking about clinching the 2022 Formula 1 title in Singapore after cruising to his fifth straight win, triumphing at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday.
Red Bull’s Verstappen was barely troubled at Monza, despite starting from seventh, climbing overtaking numerous cars and having the pace to take control of the race.
The race did end under a safety car, following Daniel Ricciardo’s retirement due to an oil leak with his car stuck in gear, frustrating some of the Monza fans who wanted a one-lap shootout as the field condensed.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was second and a shootout may have enabled the Italian manufacturer a shot at victory at their home track but it wasn’t to be. George Russell rounded out the podium.
But Verstappen would not be drawn into that debate, with another 25 points moving him to 335, ahead of Leclerc on 219 with six races to go, with a 116-point gap.
That situation means the Dutchman could mathematically claim the F1 title in Singapore, if he can stretch his lead beyond 130 points.
“I need a bit of luck for that as well, and I don’t think about it,” he said.
“I just want to go to Singapore and try to win that race as well, just have a good time. We are having a great season, so we should also really appreciate it and just enjoy the moment.
“We want to win more as a team, so we’ll try that.”
Verstappen claimed his maiden Monza podium, but also his 11th victory of the season in a dominant year for him and Red Bull.
“It’s amazing what were experiencing within the team,” Verstappen said. “I think were having an amazing year and its important to enjoy it as well.
“We’ve had a lot of different challenges of different kinds of tracks and now the car seems to work at every single kind of track and we are extremely pleased.”
