NASCAR Unveils All-Star Race Format

The format for the 2023 NASCAR All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway was announced Thursday (April 6).

It features a pit-crew challenge, heat races, an Open and the main event.

The pit-crew challenge, which runs on Friday, May 19, consists of a four-tire only pit stop; the pit stop times will determine the lineups for the All-Star Heat Races and the All-Star Open.

On Saturday, May 20, two heat races will run at 60 laps in length, which will set the lineups for the All-Star Race. Heat 1 sets the inside row of the main event, while heat 2’s finishing order sets the outside lane.

The Open, running on Sunday, May 21, will have 100 laps and a competition break on or around lap 40. The top two finishers of that race will make the main All-Star Race, as well as whoever wins the fan vote.

Then, the main event consists of 200 laps with a competition break on or about lap 100. Cars start on sticker tires and will have three more sets of tires in the pits. After the halfway break, only one set of sticker tires may be used.

Overtime rules will be in effect, and all laps will count.

Drivers who are eligible for the All-Star Race are past winners of points-paying races since 2022, current full-time drivers who won an All-Star Race in the past and past NASCAR Cup Series champions.

These drivers are currently eligible: Christopher Bell, Ryan Blaney, Alex Bowman, Chase Briscoe, Chris Buescher, Kyle Busch, William Byron, Ross Chastain, Austin Cindric, Austin Dillon, Chase Elliott, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Erik Jones, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Larson, Joey Logano, Tyler Reddick, Daniel Suarez, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Martin Truex Jr. and Bubba Wallace.
