Generational Conflict

The biggest story heading into the Ventura ST is the same as it was heading into the Dallas Half-Mile, and one which could easily prove to be the biggest story for the rest of the season… perhaps for the next few seasons. 

We are on the verge of a full-scale thermonuclear championship battle between a legend who has been one of the sport’s great powers for the past two decades and a rising star who is on a trajectory that suggests he could fill a similar role for the next couple of decades. 

Mission SuperTwins points leader Dallas Daniels (No. 32 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT) and reigning champion Jared Mees (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle/Rogers Racing/SDI Racing FTR750) have cleared out some space for themselves atop the points standings by splitting the season’s four oval wins up amongst themselves. 

While the racing between the two has been, at times, spectacular, it has stayed clean and respectful. What are the odds that remains the case for an entire season? 

It’s certainly possible – and it could be a fascinating show without the introduction of overt mind games or interpersonal drama – but it still feels like a cold war just waiting to get hot.

When contemplating the possibility of Mees eventually passing the torch to Daniels, it’s worth remembering that Briar Bauman (No. 3 Parts Plus/Jacob Companies KTM 890 Duke) will ultimately have a say. 

He’s in the same discussion in terms of sheer talent and long-term potential to impact the record books. Still just 27 years old, Bauman beat Mees for consecutive Championships in 2019 and 2020 and came up a combined 37 points short of making that four straight titles from ‘19-’22.
